According to the America’s Health Rankings report from the United Health Foundation, Vermont is the most healthy state and Mississippi the least healthy.
Vermont rose from 20th in 1990 and 1991 to the top position due to its strengths in high school graduation rates, low violent crime, low percentage of children in poverty, high per capita public health funding, a low rate of uninsured population and ready availability of primary care physicians.
Mississippi is the least healthy, ranked 50th in 2010 as it has been for the past 9 years. It has ranked in the bottom three states since 1990. The state scores low due to its high percentage of infant mortality rates, low rates of high school graduation, limited availability of primary care physicians and high percentage of children in poverty.
